“Wow!”
In response to the “One without the Other: Stories of unity through diversity and inclusion”
This excerpt changed the way I see inclusion, my initial perspective on inclusion also follows the general trend, I thought inclusion means– providing special care for students with special needs. However, after reading, I found my thinking is too binary, I naturally classified myself with the more ‘normal’ ones, which shows my arrogant attitude about myself. Sure, I have my learning difficulties but I don’t exaggerate them as my learning needs, this reveals my ‘in group’ and ‘out group’ thinking. This is not inclusion, I think what we do in traditional classroom is just to create hiearachy within learning needs, classify people with more learning needs as people who needs special care, and exclude them from the normal curriculum.
“Wonder?”
I wonder how our teaching would change if we realize that inclusion is just to treat everyone and their learning needs as equal. I think the first obstacle we would face is how to diversify our teaching methods. How diverse should we be in order to meet everyone’s learning needs? If we cannot do 1V1 in class, then what other resources we can use to assist learning?
